2007-08 Phoenix Suns

Fans believe that the Championship should have gone to Phoenix. Nevertheless, the Suns are a championship caliber team, and they will continue to stay that way through the ’07-08 season. They still have two time MVP Steve Nash, who will carry on those great assists for Amare Stoudemire. Stoudemire is back after micro facture surgery, and if his numbers continue into the next season, the Suns will definitely be killer on the court. They also have a seasoned veteran in Grant Hill.  Ticket buyers to the Suns can expect their team to improve their bench in their coming season – and if the bench is as good as last seasons, the Suns will be unstoppable.

Previous Seasons

The Phoenix Suns landed in Arizona in the 1968-69 season as an NBA expansion team. As with most expansion clubs the Suns’ first foray into the NBA regular season ended in a dismal 16-66 outing although they raised fans’ hopes for awhile with a quick 4-3 start. Unlike most expansion teams though, it didn’t take the Suns years of building to hit the post-season. That franchise first occurred in Year 2 with a rather controversial move. The Suns chose Connie Hawkins with their second pick in the draft. Hawkins had been banned from the NBA for several years due to his involvement with gambling in college. When the NBA allowed him to play, and the Suns head coach Jerry Colangelo decided to turn him loose, Hawkins responded by leading Phoenix with a 26.4 point per game average. That was good enough to help the Suns recover from a slow start and sneak into the playoffs with a 39-43 record. Phoenix shocked the NBA by pushing the vaunted Lakers to the limit before falling in Game 7 of the series.

It would be 1976 before the Suns returned to the NBA Playoffs and winning basketball. Getting a hot hand in the last half of the season, the Suns finished at 42-40 to notch the second playoff berth in team history. The Suns roster featured Rookie of the Year Alvan Adams in a key role that took the Suns further into the post-season than anyone in Phoenix imagined. The Suns earned a spot in the Western Conference Finals by knocking off the Seattle Supersonics after six games. Their Western Conference Finals opponents, the Golden State Warriors, were coming off an NBA Championship and appeared poised to repeat. The Suns had different ideas. After battling to a 2-2 series ties, things looked bleak for Phoenix after they fell behind 3-2. The Suns rallied however and forced a climactic Game 7 in Oakland. There the upstart Suns knocked off the defending champions on their home court to reach the NBA Finals.
